The goal of enlightenment is to be immersed in the message of the Dharma, to take refuge in the teachings rather than depend on a teacher. The authentic self needs to be an autonomous self with many influences shaping it.

-- Margaret Petersson

Attainment without a teacher occurs when one takes refuge in the Dharma itself rather than relying on another karma-bound being for one’s own awakening but while still allowing us to receive guidance and direction from experienced teachers.

-- Diane Lux
