Juseige Chant

Song of Praise

The Juseige is the second of three gathas (Songs of Praise) in the primary sutra of Shin Buddhism, The Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life. This sutra passage recounts Chapter 8 of this mythical Sacred Story, in which the Bodhisattva Dharmakara promises to embark on a quest for enlightenment and then makes 48 Vows to the Buddha Lokes-vararaja. After declaring these vows he praises these vows with this gatha (poem).

SHOSHINGE CHANT

Shoshinge means Gatha on true entrusting of the Nembutsu. A gatha is a Buddhist poem. This gatha is an exposition of the Pure Land Teaching, which is divided into two main parts: 1) based on the Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life, the principle Pure Land scripture and 2) based on the commentaries. Our abridged version pays homage to Amida, the universal Buddha, and Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, and describes the mythical Sacred Story while exploring basic Pure Land teachings of faith, true entrusting and Nembutsu-namu-Amida-Butsu.
