Element Vb: (optional ceremonies)

These are popular ceremonies are done on occasion with the intention of serving as a vehicle to remember and inspire basic practice.  The first deals with daily ethical practice and the latter applies to the Bodhisattva Vows.

(This ceremony serves as a remembrance and affirmation of ethical living whose source is  the Vimalakirti Sutra)

Leader: The practice of Fivefold Precepts represents our commitment to the Buddhist way of life, the Three Jewels and our willingness to realize total spiritual transformation.

These wonderful Fivefold Precepts are not commandments but are guidelines for a wholesome way of life that transform our suffering into peace, joy and liberation. Furthermore, they serve as a deep hearing practice, helping us to study our foolish selves and ultimately realize our self-centeredness within the embrace of Boundless Compassion, which is the gateway to an authentic spiritual life.

Please, recite each Precept and answer “yes” in your mind every time you see that you have made an effort to study, practice and observe the Precept read. Then bow after the sound of the mindfulness bell. (bell)

Leader:             The First Precept

Everyone:         I will practice love;

I refrain from killing.*

Leader:             The Second Precept

Everyone:         I will practice generosity;

I refrain from stealing.*

Leader:             The Third Precept

Everyone:         I will practice contentment;

I refrain from sexual misconduct.*

Leader:             The Fourth Precept

Everyone:         I will practice mindful speech;

I refrain from harmful speech.*

Leader:             The Fifth Precept

Everyone:         I will practice mindful consumption;

I refrain from intoxicants and harmful substances

that harm myself, society and the environment.*

* = (bell & bow)

(This ceremony serves to illuminate the direction and meaning of our lives)

Leader:             The Bodhisattva Vows are the core of Mahayana Buddhist spiritual life. They allow us to embody our highest religious aspirations, in which we commit ourselves to deeper understanding, practice, love and selfless service. Now let us recite the Bodhisattva Vows

Everyone:         Sentient beings are numberless, I vow to save them all;
Greed, hatred, and ignorance rise endlessly, I vow to end them all;
Dharmas are boundless, I vow to learn them all;
The Buddha's way is unsurpassable, I vow to embody it.
(2 bells & bow)
